Left turn on a solid green

A green light permits your left turn — it does not protect it.

Green light. Your light is solid green. You want to turn left. A red car approaches from the opposite direction, going straight.

Rule: On a circular green you may go straight or turn, but turning traffic yields to pedestrians in the crosswalk and to vehicles in the intersection, and a left turn also yields to oncoming traffic close enough to be a hazard.

Read the whole scene as text
  1. Green light: Your light is solid green. You want to turn left. A red car approaches from the opposite direction, going straight.
  2. Decision point: You have pulled forward to the stop line. The oncoming car is close and still coming.
  3. Oncoming car passes: You wait. The oncoming car passes straight through.
  4. You turn: With the way clear, you complete your left turn.

  1. Sample 1 · Washington rule

In Washington, you may not park within how many feet of a fire hydrant?

    • 8 feet
    • 10 feet
    • 15 feet
    • 20 feet
    Show answer

15 feet. Washington's handbook sets 15 feet. This number differs between states — 5, 8, 10 and 15 feet all appear in state handbooks — so learn your own.

  2. Sample 2 · Washington rule

In Washington, a driver aged 21 or older is over the legal limit at a blood alcohol concentration of:

    • 0.02%
    • 0.05%
    • 0.08%
    • 0.10%
    Show answer

0.08%. 0.08% is the per se limit for adult drivers in Washington. You can still be charged below it if alcohol has impaired your driving; the only safe level is none.

  3. Sample 3 · National standard

    Red octagon STOP sign

What does this sign require you to do? (Red octagon STOP sign)

    • Slow down and continue if no one is coming
    • Come to a full stop, then go only when it is safe
    • Stop only if other vehicles are at the intersection
    • Stop only when turning
    Show answer

Come to a full stop, then go only when it is safe. An octagon is used for STOP and nothing else. It is placed where a full stop is always required, so you stop completely every time, then proceed only when you can do so safely.
