Why diesel is no longer the cheap option
For decades most of Europe taxed diesel more lightly than petrol, on the argument that it was the fuel of hauliers and farmers rather than motorists. That gap has been closing since the 2015 emissions scandal, and in a growing number of markets — including the UK and much of central Europe — diesel now costs more per litre than petrol 95. It can still be cheaper per mile, because a diesel engine goes further on a litre, which is why the comparison that matters is cost per 100 km rather than cost per litre.
Why diesel swings harder than petrol
Diesel and heating oil are close cousins refined from the same middle distillates, so a cold northern-hemisphere winter bids for the same barrels twice and pushes pump prices up outside the usual driving-season pattern. Diesel is also the fuel of freight, which means its price tracks industrial demand rather than holiday traffic. The result is a series that moves on a different cycle from petrol — visible on any country page where both lines are plotted together.

Is diesel cheaper than petrol?
Per litre, increasingly not: the EU average is €2.01 for diesel against €1.94 for petrol 95 this week. Per kilometre it often still is, because diesel engines are typically 15–25% more efficient. Whether a diesel is cheaper to run therefore depends on your car and your mileage, not on the pump price alone — the car fuel-cost pages price specific models both ways.
How much of a diesel price is tax?
In most of western Europe, between 45% and 60% — excise duty plus VAT charged on top of the duty. That is why two neighbouring countries buying the same barrel of crude can have pump prices 50 cents apart, and why the tax-share table on this page is a better guide to where fuel is expensive than any commentary about oil markets.
How often do these diesel prices update?
Weekly for Europe, from the European Commission's Weekly Oil Bulletin (currently the week of 2026-07-27), daily for the United States, and monthly for Canada.
