How much does it cost to drive between two cities?
It is the road distance divided by your car's fuel economy, multiplied by the local pump price. Every route page here does that with a real OpenStreetMap driving distance and the current official average price at the origin, for a petrol, diesel and electric car — and lets you switch the vehicle type to match what you actually drive.
How do I work out the fuel cost of my own trip?
Take your distance, divide by your car's MPG (or multiply by L/100 km and divide by 100), then multiply by the price per gallon or litre where you fill up. The route planner does all of it for any two places, including the stations along the way.
Is it cheaper to drive or to fly?
Fuel for a long drive is usually less than one airfare and it does not multiply by the number of people in the car, which is why driving tends to win for two or more travellers on trips of a few hundred miles. Flying wins on time, and on very long trips once hotels and meals on the road are counted.
Do these figures update?
Yes. European prices come from the European Commission's Weekly Oil Bulletin and US prices from the EIA and AAA, each on its own publishing schedule, so every route cost on the site moves with the market rather than being frozen when the page was written.
