111 countries report petrol 95 this week. The gap between the cheapest and the dearest is €2.85 a litre — on a 50-litre tank, €142.50. The EU average works out at $8.36 a US gallon.

Why the same fuel costs three times as much across a border
Petrol is a globally traded commodity: the product itself costs roughly the same everywhere, because it is refined from the same crude and shipped on the same tankers. Almost the entire spread you see on this page is policy. Producer states subsidise their own consumption below cost, most of Europe layers excise duty and then charges VAT on top of the duty, and a handful of markets do both at once. That is why the EU average of €1.94 — about $8.36 a US gallon — sits several times above the cheapest countries here despite buying identical fuel.
What E10 means for the price you see
Most of Europe now sells 95-octane petrol as E10, blended with up to 10% ethanol, and sells the older pure-petrol E5 at a premium if at all. Ethanol is usually cheaper per litre than petroleum but carries slightly less energy, so an E10 pump price is a little lower and consumption a little higher. The official series on this page follow whichever grade each country reports as its standard Euro-super 95, which keeps the countries comparable even where the blend differs.

Why is petrol more expensive than diesel in some countries and cheaper in others?
It is a tax choice, not a refining one. Countries that historically favoured hauliers taxed diesel more lightly, and several are now unwinding that.
