Common questions

How do I calculate the gas cost of a trip?

Divide the distance by your car's MPG to get the gallons, then multiply by the price per gallon. A 300-mile trip in a 25 MPG car uses 12 gallons; at today's US average of $4.28 that is $51.41. Double it for the round trip.

How much gas money do I need for a road trip?

Price the whole route rather than using one average: gas in the cheapest state (North Carolina, $3.51) costs far less than in the most expensive (California, $6.03). Our road trip calculator prices each state you cross, and adding 10% covers detours and city driving.

What is the gas cost per mile?

Price per gallon divided by MPG. At $4.28 a gallon, a 25 MPG car costs $0.17 a mile and a 40 MPG hybrid $0.11.

How much does it cost to fill up a gas tank?

Tank size times the price per gallon. A typical 15-gallon sedan tank costs $64.26 to fill from empty at today's US average, a 26-gallon pickup tank $111.38. Most people refuel with a quarter left, so a real fill-up is about three quarters of that.
